The Rural/Metro Fire Department crews fought a two alarm fire at the Highlands Apartments, 5755 E. River Road, early this morning. Dispatched at approximately 4:40 a.m., the first arriving crew found 6 apartments that were burning and smoke damage to several others.

They immediately requested a second alarm due to heavy black smoke coming from the apartments and a significant amount of flames spreading along the roof. Many occupants were alerted by the sound of smoke detectors, some by the firefighters assigned to evacuate the adjacent apartments. One occupant was transported to a local emergency department for smoke inhalation and burns.

It took firefighters about 50 minutes to stop the spread of the fire and have it under control. Fire investigators are on the scene starting their investigation to find a possible cause and an estimate of damages. Team members from the Red Cross are on scene in the clubhouse assisting residents.
