Every winter, when the Tucson heat lets off just a bit, thousands of people flock to town to buy, sell, and trade precious minerals and other gems at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. This year, the Gem and Mineral Show will be making its 59th appearance in our fair city. The show is brought to us by the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society, a group dedicated to "Encourage interest and study in geology, mineralogy, lapidary, and allied earth sciences".

For those Tucsonans who have never attended the festivities, and those visiting town, the Gem and Mineral Show can be almost overwhelming in its size and scope. The Gem and Mineral show is an event for the whole family to enjoy, and everyone can find something that they like. Jewelry of all metals and makes, furniture and household decorations cut from rock or precious metals, and glasswork will be on display throughout every location and event, guaranteeing every visitor will encounter something that will spark their interest. There are various events linked to the Gem and Mineral Show that occur at different times over the two week period at varying locations, but the main affair will be taking place over the last weekend, Feb. 15 through Feb. 17, at the Tucson Convention Center.

The Gem and Mineral show isn't just a giant market bazaar for those who want to buy and sell goods. Starting Thursday, Feb. 7, lectures and seminars will be held at the T.C.C., free of charge and open to the public. These seminars are intended to educated those interested in what is going on in the world of geology and mineralogical studies. The show also offers child education, experiments in the children's section of the events are dedicated to helping children understand the varied sciences of the stones and precious minerals that the Gem and Mineral Show is based upon.

If your family and friends are looking for something to do in the next coming weeks, consider a trip down to one of the many locations of the 59th annual Tucson Gem and Mineral Show and get a taste for the nation's largest collection of gem and mineral collector's and vendors.
