Andreas Theodorou, MD, chief medical officer for The University of Arizona Medical Center, was elected chair-elect of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Chief Medical Officer Group’s (CMOG) Steering Committee.

He was elected during the AAMC’s annual meeting. He will serve as chair-elect in 2014 and chair in 2015.

Dr. Theodorou is a professor of pediatric critical care and vice chair of the UA Department of Pediatrics, and interim director of the internationally recognized UA Interprofessional Education & Practicecurriculum.

As a pediatric intensivist, Dr. Theodorou takes care of critically ill children at The University of Arizona Medical Center - Diamond Children’s. He has been recognized in Arizona for his expertise in treating children with traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

As a researcher with the UA Steele Children’s Research Center, he conducts research in the area of medical error reduction, and was one of the lead investigators on the internationally recognized scorpionanti-venom study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The AAMC Chief Medical Officer Group provides information, networking opportunities and professional development resources for CMOs and other physicians who lead clinical programs in AAMC-member organizations. CMOG hosts sessions at the AAMC annual meeting and presents an annual professional-development program for members or sponsored guests.

The AAMC was founded in 1876 and represents all 141 accredited U.S. (and 17 accredited Canadian) medical schools, nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems and 90 academic and scientific societies. Through these institutions and organizations, the AAMC represents 128,000 faculty members, 75,000 medical students and 110,000 resident-physicians.  AAMC’s mission is to serve and lead the academic medicine community to improve the health of all. It supports the entire spectrum of education, research and patient-care activities conducted by member institutions.
