The Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce presents this month’s Taking Care of your Business breakfast. The breakfast is on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7 a.m. at the Best Western Inn Suites, 6201 N. Oracle Road. The cost for breakfast is $12 for Chamber members and $15 for non-members. Register by Tuesday, Dec. 2, online at www.tucsonchamber.org.
The vice president of research at the Goldwater Institute in Phoenix, Matthew Ladner, will present a talk about how public education reforms in Florida will help to improve public education across the United States.
Florida began reforms in its public school system in 1999. The results eight years later were impressive. The percentage of fourth graders who could read at their grade level went way up. Hispanic students in Florida’s achievement rate is second-highest in the country. African-Americans rank fourth-highest. On standardized tests, the average Hispanic achievement score is higher than the average for all students in 15 states, including Arizona.
