Oro Valley residents, officials and business leaders cut the ribbon on the community’s new, 104-room Wingate by Wyndham hotel last Thursday at Steam Pump Village.

General manager Ivan Drechsler addressed the evening reception, along with assistant general manager Flory Cruz and owner Mike Patel.

“It’s a fabulous hotel,” Mayor Paul Loomis told the crowd. “It’s a great asset to our community. We finally got it here and open and doing business, and that’s exciting.”

Guests also celebrated the latest monumental public art by resident artist Matthew Moutafis.

“The Spirit of Oro Valley” is Moutafis’ sculpture of a “very spirited, bold and young stallion” representing “the spirit of a young and dynamic and ever-evolving, changing community, one that pays attention to everything,” he said.

“It’s a welcome to all who enter, to remind them of the history, and to tell them of the young, progressive community that Oro Valley is,” Moutafis said.

A century ago on the site, the George Pusch Ranch served as a way station to travelers who picked up fresh horses and provisions to resume their journeys into Tucson. “Think back 100 years,” Dick Eggerding urged the audience. “There is this whole mother lode of history surrounding you. There is a synergism here.”

The Santa Catalina Mountains particularly tower above what is today called Steam Pump Ranch. That segment of mountain is widely known as Pusch Ridge.

“It’s a wonderful spot,” Moutafis said.

The full-service hotel opened Jan. 30. It is located at 11075 N. Oracle Rd., part of the Steam Pump Village commercial complex.
