Image is important to most people, and catering to that image is what has kept Roy and Yolanda Valenzuela, the owners of Hair & Skin Studio, successful for the past 30 years.

Hair & Skin Studio is celebrating its 10th year in its current location at 7225 N. Oracle Road, Suite 108, north of Ina Road. For the previous 20 years, it was located at Oracle and Prince roads.

The Valenzuelas, who have been married 36 years, have a combined total of 73 years in the hair styling business between them.

"Since we opened in 1979, we've strived to be the leading source for quality hair, skin and nail services for men and women," Roy Valenzuela said. "Because image is so important, we hold ourselves to a high standard of excellence by committing to interactive learning and personal development by each staff member."

Valenzuela said the regular training helps to keep his employees energized and motivated "so they're aware of their responsibilities and know how to respond to customer needs and help grow the business."

Valenzuela does some of the training through Summit Salon Consulting Group, an organization that works toward keeping independent salons successful.

"We're the only Summit Salon in Tucson and by using their services, we're able to keep a step ahead, even during this economic downturn," Valenzuela said. "And in addition, I attribute many of the business ideas I use to my father." His father is William Valenzuela, owner of W.G. Valenzuela Drywall Inc. in Tucson.

Roy Valenzuela also is a regional artist and educator for Redken 5th Avenue of New York City, which provides hair care products to professional salons. As part of his duties, he gives training programs on techniques for using shampoos, conditioners and other styling products, as well as on general business techniques for salons.

The Valenzuelas recently renovated the Hair & Skin Studio with new paint and an assortment of new equipment to accommodate the eight hair stylists (two of whom also are skin therapists) and one trainee who work there. Cheryl Collins and Jenna Loving take care of customer service.

"We wanted to give it a more European feeling," said Roy Valenzuela, "so there are no stations or cubbys."

Salon manager Collins, who has worked for Hair & Skin Studio for 10 years, the past nine as manager, called hair styling, and especially coloring, the heart of the business.

"Our stylists do a lot of coloring for clients, so we encourage regular and frequent education to keep up on new techniques," Collins said. "Our stylists always are getting new ideas to give fresh looks to our customers."

Besides hair styling and color services, Hair & Skin Studio also offers texture (permanent) services, microderm abrasion and other skin care, waxing and natural nail services.

Collins pointed out Hair & Skin Studio handles both female and male clients, "at all ages, from children to grandparents."
