A business in Marana is giving $5,000 to help deter underage drinking in the community.

Wal-Mart in Marana made its donation Thursday to the Marana Northwest Community Partnership Coalition, which is operating the program “Responsibility. Education. Deterrence.”

Kelly Larkin, executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Southern Arizona and chair of the Northwest coalition, accepted the award.

“Responsibility. Education. Deterrence.,” is intended to teach and reward merchants about the dangers and legalities of serving or selling alcohol to underage drinkers, as well as selling too much alcohol to drinkers of legal age.

The RED in Marana is the first of its kind in Pima County. The Pima County Community Partnership Coalition is providing funds for the effort.
