The musical melodrama is based on the biblical account of the 4th century Persian empire, where Jews were taken in as subjects. King Ahasuerus’ wife, Queen Vashti, was executed for failing to follow his orders. He ordered a national beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queen—though she refused to divulge she was Jewish. Esther’s original Hebrew name was Hadassah, meaning “myrtle”.
Family audiences can boo and hiss the villain or cheer the heroes in Myrtle, the family-friendly musical comedy melodrama that is based on the Old Testament book of Esther and set in the 1800s American West. Also featured are outrageous olios and audience sing-alongs of yesteryear.
