Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 S. Sixth Ave. in downtown Tucson, will hold auditions this weekend and next month for two upcoming plays.

On Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m., actors can audition for roles in the world premiere of “A Cactus Christmas,” by John Vornholt. Callbacks are scheduled for Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Directed by Pat Timm, “A Cactus Christmas” is a family-friendly, holiday romp set in the ghost town of Wishbone, Ariz.

It tells the story of a pair of desert rats who, after encountering a city family, conjure up a spirited plan to protect the gold they believe is right under their noses.

Actors can try out for the following roles:

• Pete – Desert rat and treasure hunter, worn-looking 50s

• Alice – Pete’s wife and fellow desert rat, not as worn-looking 50s

• Jeffrey – Dad, looks about 40

• Mona – Mom, looks about 35

• Felicia – Daughter, looks about 14

• Royce – Son, looks about 11

• Ghost – Looks like a ghost

The first meeting and read-through are expected to take place during the week of Sept. 12. Rehearsals should begin Oct. 24.

A preview performance is planned for Dec. 8. Performance dates begin Dec. 8 and continue Wednesdays through Sundays, ending on Saturday, Dec. 24.

The theater group will then hold auditions Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. for “We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!” The play was written by Dario Fo and adapted by Ron Jensen.

It has two male roles to fill:

• Antonia’s husband, age 30-45

• Multiple roles, ages 35-75. This actor must be able to handle Italian dialect and be adept at physical comedy.

Rehearsals begin in mid-December. Performances run Fridays through Sundays from Jan. 26 to Feb. 19.
