The author of the first book about the mass shootings that took place Jan. 8 in northwest Tucson will discuss the human side of the tragedy and its aftermath Saturday at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in the Foothills Mall.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Dr. John Newport, author of "The Tucson Tragedy: Lessons from the Senseless Shooting of Gabrielle Giffords," will be at the store, which is located at Ina Road and La Cholla Boulevard.

In addition to the shootings, he will talk about the wave of healing triggered by the event.

Newport resides in northwest Tucson, just one mile from the site of the shooting, at Ina and Oracle roads. He reports that he would have been at the meet and greet event had he known about it.

The Saturday afternoon talk will feature the author's views on "heroes arising from the tragedy" and "lessons to be learned from this tragic event."

Newport will also be available to respond to questions concerning additional repercussions of the shooting affecting both the Tucson community and the nation.

For more information, call the store at 742-6402.
