A co-founder of the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society cactus rescue crew is the winner of this year's Arizona Department of Water Resources/Tucson Botanical Gardens Community Xeriscape Leader Award.

Christian K. Monrad, P.E., vice president of Monrad Engineering, Inc., is being recognized as "a driving force in promoting xeriscape principles and / or the use of native and arid-adapted plants," a release said.

Since its founding 10 years ago, the TCSS cactus rescue crew has collected over 45,000 native plants from development sites in Southern Arizona and redistributed them back into the local community for low water use landscaping.
