The 10th anniversary of the Empire Ranch Roundup is this Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Empire Ranch in Sonoita.

"Celebration of the Cowboy" at the historic ranch is free, and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is $10.

There are wagon rides, entertainment, working cattle demonstrations, displays of western skills, miniature horses, cowboy conversations and story-telling, exhibits, cowboy-mounted shooters, border collies and sheep herding, a western authors pavilion, auctions and raffles, an expanded food corral and much more.

The event is a "friend raiser," and an open invitation from the Empire Ranch Foundation and the Bureau of Land Management for people to see the annual progress at Empire Ranch and the nearby Las Cienegas National Conservation Area.

This year, work has been completed in the Heritage Discovery Trail, guiding visitors into the tall cottonwoods and Empire Gulch. Work at Las Cienegas has been ongoing, with American Recovery Project funds used to remove invasive mesquite, returning the land to grasslands and improving grazing use.

Work continues at the historic, 22-room adobe and wood frame ranch headquarters, which dates to 1870.

Empire Ranch is located 30 miles southeast of Tucson. Take I-10 east to exit 281, scenic Highway 83 to Sonoita, and left at the sign.
