Make bowls to donate to food bank fundraiser

Experienced potters and people who are interested in learning to work with clay are invited to make bowls that will be donated to a local food bank for a fundraising event.

Four Bowl-a-Thons will be held in January, February and March in Studio 302 at the Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department’s Northwest Art Center, 7770 N. Shannon Road.

Longtime potter, clay artist and teacher Jada Ahern will lead and provide instruction at the free Bowl-a-Thons from 1 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 7 and March 1 and from 6 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 26 and Feb. 10. Clay is being donated by Marjon Ceramics.

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. People can attend more than one session.

Bowls will be hand-built and wheel-thrown and will be donated to the Interfaith Community Services Food Bank, 2820 W. Ina Road, for an Empty Bowls fundraising event on March 17. People who buy a bowl at the event will also get soup, bread and a beverage.

“Our goal is to produce 500 bowls,” Ahern said.

Ahern’s students made 100 bowls for an Empty Bowls event in November at Kino Community Center, 2805 E. Ajo Way, that benefited the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Other artists also contributed to the event that raised $9,500.

For more information about the Bowl-a-Thons or to register, call Ahern at 520-870-0823.

Ahern’s website is www.jadasclay.com.
