Cotillion is coming to Pima County.

The 30-year-old program of etiquette, character education and social dance training soon will establish a branch in Southern Arizona, according to a press release from the National League of Junior Cotillions.

The program, which serves middle and junior high school students, aims to give students instruction and practice in the courtesies that make life more pleasant for them and those around them.

In addition to the usual courtesies connected with dancing and etiquette, students learn character instruction in the areas of honor, respect, ethics and sportsmanship. Through role-playing, skits and games, they learn how to correspond by mail, introduce friends, behave courteously at the dinner table, receive compliments and talk politely on cell phones.

Cotillion includes monthly classes and two balls, the Holly Ball and Spring Ball. It also includes instructional dinners in three, five and seven courses.

Standard ballroom and line dancing is taught using nationally approved Top 40 music.

The program is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., and has hundreds of chapters in 34 states.
