Musical prodigies are featured in two summertime concerts put on by the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Oro Valley.
In "Bumblebees and Bach," Wayne Shen presents a violin recital with piano accompanist Yelizaveta "Leeza" Beriyeva on Saturday, July 11, at 3 p.m.
Shen is "an accomplished musician equally at home on the violin and piano, having soloed on both instruments with orchestras across the United States and Mexico," a release said. "The Flight of the Bumblebee" is part of his program.
Beriyeva is the featured performer in "Piano Fireworks," to be presented Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
In addition to an active professional performing career, Beriyeva devotes much time to teaching piano, music theory, music history and ear training lessons. She has performed in her native Republic of Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Italy and the United States and has won numerous prizes. Beriyeva is well remembered from recitals in greater Tucson, including her performance at St. Mark's last year, a release said.
This is a Haydn year, in memory of the 200th anniversary of the composer's death. Leeza is performing one of Haydn's piano sonatas as well as a beautiful Chopin piece. She closes with one of only two piano sonatas ever composed by Sergei Rachmaninov, the challenging piece Sonata in b flat minor.
Both performances are at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 1431 W. Magee Road, the southwest corner of Magee and La Canada.
