The University of Arizona School of Music will present an Oro Valley Musicale at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 11575 N. First Ave.

The program will feature three UA student performances.

Cellist Garrick Woods will be joined on stage by his father, pianist Rex Woods, vice-director of the UA School of Music.

Garrick, whose mother, Mary Woods, is a versatile soprano, began studying the violin at age 4. By age 5, he had graduated to the cello.

He has studied with Mary Beth Tyndall, as well as Cassel Grubb, Pamela Frame, Zoran Stilin, Nelzimar Neves, Nancy Green and Mark Votapek. He also has participated in workshops and master classes with Janos Starker, Carter Brey and Yo-Yo Ma.

Together with The Sonora String Quartet, he participated in the Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Seminar, and performed on the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music concert series.

In 2001, Garrick was the Emerson Scholarship winner for the state of Arizona at Interlochen.

Rex Woods has performed through the U.S., Canada, Mexico, France, China and Australia. He has collaborated in recitals and recordings with soprano Faye Robinson; baritone Richard J. Clark; cellists Gordon Epperson, Nancy Green and Pamela Frame; violinist John Ferrell; and violist Hong-Mei Xiao.

He has performed with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Catalina Chamber Orchestra and the University of Arizona Symphony Orchestra.

Rex Woods has served on the faculties of the University of Texas at Austin and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Since 1988, he has taught at the University of Arizona.

The Woods live in Oro Valley.

“Brazukas,” the award-winning guitar duo of Eduardo Minozzi Costa and Gabriel Navia, will perform Brazilian masterworks at the March 22 concert.

Both guitarists have degrees in classical guitar from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and are currently pursuing master’s degrees in guitar performance. Each artist has won numerous classical guitar competitions and has performed by invitation throughout the world.

The Arizona Graduate Winds soon will compete as a national finalist in the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Chamber Music Competition in Atlanta. The quintet is comprised of flutist Erica Schiller, oboist David Garner, clarinetist Lisa Kachouee, bassoonist Jason Souliere and horn player J. Gregory Miller.

The Winds will perform “Six Bagatelles” by Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti.
