University of Arizona graduate ArcoIris Sandoval is making her own Manhattan transfer on Aug. 21. She's been accepted as a master's degree candidate in piano studies at the Manhattan School of Music.
It's not inexpensive.
To help finance her studies and move, the young woman who goes by "Arco" is holding a fund-raising concert at Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway, on Saturday, Aug. 7.
The jazz show begins at 3 p.m.
Arco is joined on stage by Jason Carder, trumpet; Matt Mitchell, guitar; Ian Stapp, bass; Pete Swan, drums; and Brice Winston, tenor sax.
The program includes jazz standards, some Latin numbers played as a duet with guitarist Matt Mitchell, and Brice Winston as featured soloist on one of Arco's own compositions. Jose Luis Sandoval, a saxophone player and Arco's dad, is the master of ceremonies. He plays an original blues number.
"We are very proud of Arco's accomplishments," said professor Jeff Haskell, coordinator of jazz studies and jazz ensembles at the U of A School of Music. "She is hard-working, dedicated and focused on her musical career. A helping hand for a talent like this is a pleasure."
Tickets are $20 and may be purchased on line through the Tucson Jazz Society before Aug. 6. Sales are cash-only at the door on Aug. 7. For information, call 1-800-594-4849.
