New bluegrass band debuts Sunday

A newly formed bluegrass band presents its debut concert this Sunday, Jan. 17, at Heritage Highlands.

The Desert Sun String Band plays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the clubhouse at Heritage Highlands, 4949 Heritage Club Boulevard in north Marana. Tickets are $10, available by calling Charlie Sides, the band leader, at 579-5918.

The Desert Sun String Band is composed of five members of the Desert Bluegrass Association — Sam Brown, Bill DeVinney, Reid Griffin, Charlie Sides and Bill Paul. They joined together in early October.

The band "only exists because of each member's love of the music, the pleasure derived from playing together and from sharing their music with others," Sides said. "This is your opportunity to enjoy an evening of hand-clapping, toe-tapping, knee-slapping good, hard-driving bluegrass music."

University Community Chorus seeks new singers

High school and adult singers are invited to join the University Community Chorus this spring.

An audition is not required for membership in the chorus, though music-reading experience is helpful, a release said.

The chorus is open to new members, and pre-registration is encouraged. A $50 registration fee is due at the time of registration.

Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in room 146 of the University of Arizona School of Music. The first rehearsal is Tuesday, Jan. 19 and members are asked to arrive at 6:15 p.m. for organizational purposes.

The chorus will perform works by Vivaldi and Handel at its spring concert, "Basically Baroque," presented on Sunday, April 25 at 3 p.m. in UA's Crowder Hall.

For more information and to request registration materials, go to the ensemble's website at www.cfa.arizona.edu/ucc, or contact Dr. Elizabeth

Schauer, conductor, at 520-626-8936.
