The 28th annual Tucson International Mariachi Conference is this weekend, with concerts at the Tucson Convention Center and Saturday performances at St. Augustine Cathedral and Reid Park.

Among the festivities are a 6 p.m. Thursday student showcase and a 7 p.m. Thursday attempt by mariachis to break the Guinness World Record for the most mariachis performing simultaneously. More than 1,000 musicians are expected at the TCC.

The conference's "Espectacular Concert" is Friday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the TCC. Lila Downs also performs. A musical journey with Downs is described as "simultaneously edgy and powerful, yet sumptuous and graceful."

Mariachis play a mass at St. Augustine at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Fiesta de Garibaldi runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Reid Park.
