Pima Community College faculty member and internationally acclaimed tuba soloist Dr. Mark Nelson joins with pianist Marie Sierra and University of Arizona euphonium and tuba instructor Dr. Kelly Thomas for a recital program of original and arranged works for the tuba.
Highlighting the program will be a performance of Anna Baadsvik’s “Three Trios” for euphonium, tuba and piano, featuring a tango, a waltz and the blues. Nelson also performs an early theme and variations work for tuba titled “Beelzebub” by Catozzi, a significant new arrangement of “Songs of the Wayfarer” by Gustav Mahler, and “Four Songs” by Charles Ives. The latter was arranged by Arizona State University trombone professor Ralph Sauer.
The program rounds out with the “Sonatina” for tuba and piano by Halsey Stevens, and the “Sonata for Tuba and Piano” by Thom Ritter George.
Nelson has played tuba recitals and given master classes to audiences in many parts of the world, including Australia, Japan, England and Canada. He has premiered nearly 30 new compositions written for him over the last quarter of a century and has been instrumental in extending the limits of the tuba repertoire.
He currently serves as chair of the performing arts department and director of bands at Pima Community College. He teaches the euphonium and tuba studio classes as well as classes in music fundamentals and electronic music.
