Bicyclists and pedestrians will be able to travel from The Loop to Mike Jacob Sports Park and Xtreme Fun Spot on a car-free path when a Pima County construction project ends in February.

Construction of a 12-foot-wide path is expected to begin this month on the west side of Interstate 10 north of Cañada del Oro Wash.

The project is designed to provide safe access, especially for recreational users interested in traveling to the BMX and go-cart tracks at Xtreme Fun Spot.

This interdepartmental project included staff from Regional Wastewater Reclamation; Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation; Regional Flood Control District; Transportation; Cultural Resources; and the Project Management Office.

Granite Construction, the project contractor, plans to start the work Dec. 30 and complete it by February.

Pima County is developing The Loop around metro Tucson with links to Marana, Oro Valley, and South Tucson for residents and visitors on foot, bikes, skates, and horses.

When completed, The Loop will total 131 miles and connect the Rillito, Santa Cruz, and Pantano River Parks with the Julian Wash and Harrison Greenways. The Loop connects to parks, trails, bus and bike routes, workplaces, schools, libraries, restaurants, hotels and motels, shopping areas, and sports and entertainment venues.
