On July 13, at 1:30 p.m., deputies from the Sheriff’s Department San Xavier District responded to the 6700 block of South Vereda De Las Casitas reference a report that a 2 year-old female had been shot by a stray bullet while playing in her backyard.

When deputies arrived, they learned the 2-year-old female had already been transported to a local hospital by ambulance. The hospital reported the child’s leg injury was non-life threatening and consistent with a gunshot wound.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Department Robbery/Assault Unit and Night Detective Squad responded and took over the investigation. During their investigation, detectives determined the witness statements and the physical evidence at the scene were inconsistent. When confronted about the inaccuracies in their statements, the witnesses told detectives the 2-year-old’s uncle was responsible for the shooting

The 2-year-old’s uncle, identified as 23 year-old Richard Moreno, was in the carport while visiting at the home when he accidentally discharged his weapon. The bullet went through a wall and struck the child in the leg while she was in the living room. Richard Moreno fled the scene following the shooting. Family members were able to convince Richard Moreno to surrender to detectives and he was subsequently arrested at his mother’s residence. He was transported to the Pima County Adult Detention Center and booked on one count of Aggravated Assault.
