Don't expect to sit around at the second annual Healthiest Town in America event on Saturday, March 6, at Oro Valley Marketplace.
"It's not people sitting in their seats, watching people on stage," said MJ Jensen, the IdeaMagic chief idea officer who's event coordinator for Healthiest Town in America. "It's to get people up and moving and active."
Along the way, there are two 5K fun walks and runs, stage demonstrations to get people of all ages using their bodies, dozens of information booths with health-oriented businesses, free pedometers and more.
"We have some really fun stuff," Jensen said. "We've worked really hard in making it really interesting."
The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that Saturday at Oro Valley Marketplace, is "about learning and having fun and trying different exercises and activities and stretching, all those things we have a tendency to bypass when we're so busy with life."
Erin Christiansen, the KGUN chief meteorologist and special celebrity guest, "is the epitome of a healthy lifestyle," Jensen said. "She works out, trains, eats healthy, that's why she looks so good on television. She walks the talk."
So does Lacey Nymeyer, the Northwest woman, U.S. Olympic swimmer and silver medalist, who'll be leading one of the walks at 10:30 a.m. The fun run and walk is not a timed event, Jensen emphasizes.
"People just come, register at the event, and go at their own pace," Jensen said. "Unless they want to time themselves, this is not a competition. We want to encourage everyone to try this. This is at people's own pace."
Taking the stage throughout are strength trainers, exercise specialists, physical therapists … fitness and health experts.
"Our stage people are all really fun and different and interesting," Jensen said. "It's not a bunch of strong men up there showing off."
To date, some 45 vendors are signed up. "We're probably going to get more," Jensen said. "We have everything represented, every kind of healthy lifestyle, nutrition, weight loss, eyes and ears and senior and kid."
For the kids, there'll be a large jumping castle activity center, and a fire truck from Golder Ranch Fire District.
A year ago, close to 1,400 people attended. "We're hoping for a bigger crowd," Jensen said. "People are really paying attention to it."
