The Mountain View Mountain Lions (7-3) will look for a repeat performance when they face the Cienega Bobcats (8-2) in the first round of the Division II state playoffs on Friday. Despite a 4-6 record last year that had many labeling them an underdog heading into the regular season game, the Mountain Lions, under first-year head coach Clarence McRae, edged the Bobcats 21-19 on their own turf.

The Mountain Lions will need a similar performance if they are to advance to round two of the playoffs. 

Since the original match-up, however, the Bobcats finished the season with a five-game win streak, while Mountain View went just 3-2, though, unlike the Mountain Lions, Cienega never faced the powerhouses in Ironwood Ridge and Salpointe.

Cienega will take the No. 8 seed heading into the game, while Mountain View will be ranked No. 9. 

Cienega made it to the second round of the playoffs last year, beating Ironwood Ridge before falling to Chaparral in the second round, 37-14.

The Mountain Lions are making their first playoff appearance since 2008. 

The game will be played Friday at Cienega at 7 p.m., and the victor will face the winner of the contest between No. 1 Salpointe and No. 16 Notre Dame Prep.
