State tournament games are always nerve wracking, but especially for seniors who never know when their careers are going to end. Marana senior Casey Cadenhead pitched like she wanted to play at least one more game, shutting out Desert Edge 3-0.

Cadenhead gave up just five hits, but after some initial struggles, only had to work out of one serious jam over the final five innings when she had runners on the corner and one out in the fifth but a strike out and ground out got the Tigers out of the inning ant the Scorpions did not threaten again.

The Tiger bats were not active, but timely. The Tigers mustered just four hits on the day, but stung hits together when they were most needed.

With one out in the third Alex Gehr got the Tigers’ first hit, hitting a screamer down the base line that handcuffed the fielder. Gehr stole second and a groundout to the right side by Diondra Bodman moved Gehr to third. With two outs, freshman Kilie Lynn hit a single that scored the senior captain.

The next inning the Tigers were at it again. Katie Faulk singled and was replaced at first by pinch runner Mason Howard. Mya Cabral also singled and a grounder to the right side advanced both runners to scoring position.

Jordan Wengert hit a short chopper to right side of the pitcher and once the ball was fielded, it needed a rush thro to first. The ball sailed high, scoring Howard and Cabral and letting Wengert race to third.

Cadenhead was nails in the circle and the Scorbions never mustered enough offense to make a real challenge.

The Tigers advance to the second round with a Tuesday road trip to No.3 Yuma Kofa.
