The Irondwood Ridge Nighthawks looked to finish the season 10-0 Friday night, traveling to face the high-powered Salpointe offense.
Ironwood Ridge was 9-0 coming into the game, while Salpointe was 9-1 for the season.
Early on, the Nighthawks' defense made a big statement, blocking a Salpointe punt. Getting the ball around the four-yard-line, the Nighthawks quickly capitilized, making the score 7-0 early in the first quarter.
However, Salpointe controlled the clock, the line of scrimmage and the rest of the game, as the Nighthawks failed to capitlize on numerous opportunities, losing the contest 30-14.
Salpointe's tailback Johnny Pena had 187 yards on 27 carries for the night.
The Nighthawks, ranked number one in the state coming into this week, finished the regular season 9-1, and are likely to host two playoff games, which begin next week.
Salpointe, ranked number two coming into the week, earned the bragging rights for now.
It is possible the two teams could face each other in the playoffs.
