The Canyon Del Oro boys’ golf team looks to have another promising year ahead. The talent-packed team, led by Jaime Waltmire, has started the season out strong, commencing with a solid showing in Division II play at the Alta Mesa Golf Cup, which ran from Aug. 24-25.

The Dorados played in the Charlie Beljan Division, and their team score of 460 beat out all seven of their D-II competitors, and was good enough for a third place overall, falling only to D-I competitors Mountain View and Hamilton High School. A total of 19 teams played in the cup.

Coach John Farbarik, in his seventh season of coaching for CDO, holds a record of 584-202-1, to include a state championship team the last two consecutive years.

This year, Farbarik will see the return of several top starters in Jaime Waltmire, Chris Meyers, Chris Cotsones, PJ Dutson, and Jake Dutson.

Waltmire, a 2011 state champion, was also runner-up for state champ in 2010, and for the last two summers represented the State of Arizona in the Junior America’s Cup. He was selected as the Arizona Republic’s pick as 2011 Arizona Boys Golfer of the Year, and was named All Southern Arizona in 2010 and 2011.

Farbarik is also excited about newcomer Eric Wu, a transfer from Ironwood Ridge. Wu is expected to have a breakout season, and has plenty of experience in tournament golf.

Frankie Wu, Eric’s brother, is also a transfer from Ironwood Ridge, and is expected to play a key role on the team.

Waltmire, Meyers, and Eric Wu are each expected to be recruited to play at the college level after graduation.

Farbarik anticipates his team will make another deep run at the state tournament this year.

The Dorados will look to continue their early season success with a big showing at the Antigua National HS Golf Invitational on Sept. 7-8.
