Continuing a two-year tradition of giving, the Canyon Del Oro football team has come together again to donate to students at Prince Elementary School.
Years ago, the school would host a shoe drive for needy kids with students, parents and faculty coming together to contribute. However, the program disappeared for about five years.
In 2010, the program saw a resurgence and the football team was recruited to distribute shoes collected at CDO and Converse Shoes to every student at Prince Elementary School.
“The kids had such a good experience that we made it kind of our service project that we wanted to do for the community every year,” said Head Football Coach Dustin Peace.
Last year, the team gathered and donated school supplies. This year, the team has been collecting hoodies during school. In addition to school, the team asked the public for hoodie donations at each home football game.
Peace has always been grateful for the generosity of the people who live in and around the high school.
“With the support we get from our community here in Oro Valley, asking them if they could do this, not only for us, but more importantly for them. Doing it all together, it is something that we can do in this community,” Peace said. “I don’t think every community can fundraise and do this type of thing.”
The current goal for the donation, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 14, is to collect 635 child-sized hoodies for kindergartners through fifth graders.
Football player, senior Isaac Chacon, has participated in the program in past years, and is excited about this year’s drive.
“It’s cool to see them smile because most of them don’t have things like that, so it is cool,” Chacon said, “They have a really good time; they don’t get to do that every day.”
Stepping outside of the football field and doing something for others is something that Peace feels is important for his players to do.
“We always talk about how football isn’t everything,” Peace said. “And having them build these relationships with each other and with these kids is really special.”
To donate a hoodie to help the CDO football team’s efforts, drop a child-sized hoodie off at the Canyon Del Oro High School office, located at 25 W. Calle Concordia.
