November 22, 2006 - Three huge holiday tournaments underway this weekend could reveal which teams are contenders for state titles. Two are basketball tourneys, Boyd Baker and the Salpointe Tip-Off Classic, and the third features soccer teams, the Brandon Bean Kickoff Classic.

The largest of the three in terms of teams is the Boyd Baker Invitational, which features boys and girls teams from mostly smaller Southern Arizona schools, including Pusch Ridge Christian Academy and St. Gregory's College Preparatory.

All five of the Northwest and Foothills' large public high schools - Canyon Del Oro, Ironwood Ridge, Catalina Foothills, Marana and Mountain View - will have their boys and girls teams play in Salpointe's Brandon Bean soccer tourney.

Salpointe's boys basketball tourney has three Northwest and Foothills teams: Catalina Foothills, Ironwood Ridge and Mountain View.

The Tip-Off Classic is split between Phoenix and Tucson, with eight teams playing in pool play in each city and the tournament finals at Salpointe scheduled for Nov. 27.

The winners of each tourney the past three years have all made the state playoffs in their respective conferences.
