As Tucson celebrates the national YWCA's annual Week Without Violence, students at Harelson Elementary School will participate in activities that promote peace.

Week Without Violence, held Oct. 20 through Oct. 24, is an annual event led by YWCAs around the world to emphasize alternatives to family violence, gun violence, violence linked to racism and bigotry and violence in the media.

At Harelson Ele-mentary School, the focus on Oct. 20 is A Day of Remembrance. Students will wear red and white clothing to support peace. They also will tie peace ribbons to the school's fence.

The focus on Oct. 21 is Making Schools Safer. Students will make peace pledges. Those who have paid for fingerprint identification will have their prints made.

Select students from area elementary schools will gather at Harelson Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 21 for a peace conference. Speakers will include Link Crew from Canyon del Oro High School.

Also on Oct. 21, primary students will attend an assembly from 1 to 1:25 p.m. and intermediate students will attend from 1:35 to 2 p.m.

On Oct. 22, the focus is Living in Peace. Students will decorate paper links that will form a paper chain.

On Oct. 23, the focus is Protecting our Children - Bus Safety Week. Students will list ways they can increase peace. Primary students will attend an assembly presented by the Amphi transportation department from 10 to 10:40 a.m., and intermediate students will attend from 10:50 to 11:30 a.m.

On Oct. 24, the focus is Competition on the Basketball Court; Friendship, Respect and Unity Off the Court. Students will attend a schoolwide assembly from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include students and coaches from the boys' basketball teams at Amphitheater, Canyon del Oro and Ironwood Ridge High Schools.

The assembly will include a basketball game, student relays, and a release of peace doves. The event will be photographed from a helicopter.

T-shirts were designed by fifth graders Brennan Smith, Halley Sherrill and Lydia Lindberg.
