Nov. 16, 2005 - A new television show about business in Southern Arizona aired for the first time Nov. 13, and its host is a longtime Oro Valley resident.

"Inside Arizona Business with Dana Cooper" will highlight issues, people and organizations that are driving the region's business growth and economic development.

"I think one of the common themes is what makes businesses successful and what makes business individuals successful, and what are the keys to running a successful business," said Cooper, who has lived in Oro Valley for 16 years.

The Sunday morning program's first half-hour show, to air at 9 a.m. on KVOA Channel 4 after "Meet the Press," featured Oro Valley resident Leamon Crooms who, through his consulting business, Strategic Growth Advisors, helps other businesses grow.

Other shows planned regarding businesses in the Northwest and Foothills area include one about Ventana Medical Systems, a provider of medical equipment, and one about Sierra Tucson, a psychiatric hospital and behavioral health center near Miravel Resort in Catalina.

"Those are companies that have national profiles and are headquartered in our backyard," Cooper said.

The show will do everything from tout the accomplishments of local entrepreneurs to discuss what is involved in attracting new business to Southern Arizona, Cooper said. It will feature emerging technologies, bills before the Legislature that affect businesses, and the impact of the global economy on the local market.

"Another subject is why does it take so long to get building permits through Oro Valley," Cooper said.

The program will fill an important niche for the business community, according to Jerry Bustamante, the president and CEO of the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce.

"The business community is under-served in the media, there is no doubt about that," he said. "When we do hear news stories in the media it's usually negative in the terms of job losses, layoffs or some unfortunate event, and this show is going to focus more on a lot of your local businesses that are really under the radar because they may be smaller employers."

The show is an off-shoot of a similar one in Indianapolis that has been running for five years and has been picked up across Indiana. The executive producer of "Inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick," Jason Fenwick, recently moved to Tucson to expand the idea here. His wife is Kristi Tedesco, the KVOA news anchor who replaced Patty Weiss.

Cooper, a longtime radio and television personality in Tucson, said he was pleased about being asked to be the show's host.

"The chance to get back in broadcasting - I'm thrilled about that," he said. "I love working in TV and radio."

For 13 years, Cooper produced and hosted the Lute Olson and Dick Tomey television shows for the University of Arizona athletics department. He also covered the university's football and basketball games for FOX Sports Net Arizona, KTTU-TV Channel 18 and KFFN-AM 1490.

During the past two years, he has been getting to know businesses in Southern Arizona by working out of his home as a marketing consultant with Y2Marketing, a company that teaches businesses how to generate more customers.

"I'm talking with businesses about how to separate themselves from their competitors, how to do a more effective compelling job of telling their story," he said.

Cooper, who attends Casas Church and has daughters at Wilson K-8 School and Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, said he looks forward to highlighting businesses in the Northwest and Foothills area and beyond.

"We'll be telling stories about businesses that are not being told and are flying under the radar screen," he said.
