Capping off a weekend of ceremonies and events held in honor of the January 8 anniversary, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords led thousands in the Pledge of Allegiance at the University of Arizona Sunday night.
A year after the shooting took place near Ina and Oracle roads at Gabrielle Giffords’ Congress on Your Corner event, some continue to grieve, some choose to forget, while others quietly remember, and stay out of the public’s eye.
One year after the shooting which marked Jan. 8 as a tragic day, The Northwest Fire District Interagency Corps of Chaplains sponsored Moving Forward, an honorary ceremony which recognized public service personnel for their dedication to the community on Sunday.
Many people gathered at the James D. Kriegh Park on Jan. 7 to participate in the Oro Valley Family Fun Day. The event was one of nearly 40 others sponsored by BEYOND: Commemorate, Celebrate, Commit; a coalition organized by Gabe Zimmerman’s family and friends to develop outreach plans encouraging community members to come out into Tucson’s public lands to strengthen the sense of community, and to take advantage of Tucson’s beautiful spaces, with the full awareness that getting out and active with others promotes physical and mental health.
Over the weekend, the communities of Tucson, Marana and Oro Valley came together to remember, reflect and honor the victims of the January 8 shooting. From vigils, to Safeway unveiling a memorial where the shooting occured, thousands turned out at various events. First responders to the tragedy were honored. Heroes from the horrific day were recognized, and activities were centered around healing. The weekend was capped off with the University of Arizona candlelight vigil, where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords led the Pledge, and candles were lit for all 19 victims.
While it may be true that nobody enjoys going to the doctor, patients of Catalina Eye Care can rest assured knowing they will be given top-notch care upon their visit.
It is no mystery that high school students look forward to the weekend. It's a time to relax, put aside the week of hard work, and taste a little freedom from responsibility.
One year ago, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head during a Congress on Your Corner event at the Safeway on Ina Road.
Before the paramedics, policemen and firefighters responded to the tragic shooting at Safeway last Jan. 8, another group of responders were already working frantically to save lives.
In the weeks following the Jan. 8 shootings, members of Gabe Zimmerman’s extended family came together to form a coalition called BEYOND: Commemorate, Celebrate, Commit.
