Even if you don’t know what manga is, your kids probably do. A passion for manga among tweens, teens and young adults is sweeping the country, and MangaMania is swooping onto Pima’s Downtown Campus on July 27.

The Pima County Public Library is sponsoring a series of summer “mania” events – mini-conventions with different themes  – at host venues across the community.

Pima Community College’s Downtown Campus is hosting a mania focusing on manga, a wildly popular form of comics that originated in Japan and conforms to a style developed in the late 19th century.

In addition to art and writing workshops with opportunities to meet local authors and artists, there will be cosplay (costume play), anime viewing, video gaming, a Yu-Gi-Oh! (trading cards) tournament, and other Japanese crafting and cultural activities. Also, there will be a Bookmans manga exchange – a chance to trade old favorites for some new ones.

“Pima Community College is proud to join with the Pima County Library to offer MangaMania to our community,” said Downtown Campus President Luba Chliwniak. “The library has put together an amazing array of events, including demonstrations, workshops and speakers. The campus is a perfect setting for these events, and PCC staff will be available to answer questions or provide advising for anyone interested in learning more about college opportunities.”
