Five hundred stunning examples represent the staggering depth and breadth of Arizona State Museum’s peerless collection, recently designated an American Treasure. O’odham, Apache, and Hopi voices enrich the exhibit’s discussions of materials, technologies, traditions, and the many functions basketry has served and continues to serve in Native communities. Other stories tell of some of the early 20th century Arizonans whose personal assemblages became the foundation of ASM’s vast collection. Hands-on activities foster appreciation for the dexterity required of the craft. Visitors are sure to come away with a new appreciation for the basketry used in their own lives today.
