As many families appreciate the smell of a live tree in their homes for the holidays, the public should be reminded of the dangers associated with live trees.

The Rural/Metro Fire Department Inspection and Education Team provided a safety demonstration to minimize potential fires and property damage this holiday season.

The demonstration included burning a full size tree to show the rapid fire spread potential in a home and a discussion on safety tips.

Captain Grant Cesarek of Rural/Metro Fire Department recommends to:

• Keep your tree at least 4 feet away from any fire or heat source

• Make sure lights are turned off when you go to bed or leave your home

• Check for broken light bulbs and if they are, replace them

• Ensure that no strands of lights have frayed wires
