Three Northwest students were awarded $2,000 scholarships on May 31, when the Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual breakfast.

Britten Hernandez, Taylor Patterson and Madison LaMaster were recognized at the event. Dr. Eugene Sander, president of the University of Arizona, spoke to about 60 people who attended the event held at the Oro Valley Country Club.

Hernandez, a Canyon Del Oro graduate, is the daughter of William Hernandez and Diane Michalski. She plans to study neuroscience and/or psychology at the University of Arizona.

LaMaster, also a CDO graduate, is going to study physical therapy at Northern Arizona University. She is the daughter of Rob and Karen LaMaster.

Patterson, son of Roy and Darla Patterson, earned an associate’s degree at Pima Community College with a 4.0 grade point average. He plans to study biology and pre-medicine at Arizona Christian University.

Each student receives a $2,000, one-time scholarship to help with college costs. Funds are awarded based on academic performance, community involvement, an essay, two letters of recommendation and financial need.

Steve Engle was an Oro Valley founding father, and served as the town’s mayor from 1978 to 1990. Until his death, Mayor Engle presented deserving students with scholarships to help pay one year’s tuition. After his passing, the Greater Oro Valley Chamber started its annual scholarship program in Engle’s memory.
