Combining her passion for tennis with the need to do good for her community, Ironwood Ridge High School junior Emma Bose is hosting the Serving for Soup tennis charity event on Sept. 25.

Bose said she’s been playing tennis for 10 years, and decided to organize an event around the sport to help families who are homeless.

All of the money raised during the Sept. 25 fundraiser will benefit the New Beginnings for Women and Children organization.

The mission of the Tucson organization is to help homeless women with children by providing the housing, supportive services and opportunities for growth that will create financially independent families.

“This agency offers extensive services for homeless families, including shelter, child development programs and transitional housing,” said Bose.

Since Tucson has a large tennis community, Bose said she hopes the event will attract a large group of players, both young and old.

The format of the daylong event is a “serve-a-thon,” where participants serve as many balls as possible during a 20-minute interval. The server raises money by asking for donations based on a certain amount per ball that they are able to serve during the allotted time.

During the tournament, several fastest serve contests will also be held.

This year’s tennis tournament isn’t the first time Bose has led efforts to raise money for the homeless.

Last year, Bose started the “Hairwear for the Homeless” business, where she sells tie-dye headbands.

Through selling the headbands independently, and at the La Encantada store Mildred and Dildred, Bose donates a portion of all proceeds to New Beginnings.

The Sept. 25 event will begin at 7 a.m. at the Westward Look Resort tennis court, 245 E. Ina Road, in Tucson.
