The five-day Accenture Match Play Championship golf tournament
at Marana’s Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain wrapped up Sunday with a
new winner crowned.
Englishman Luke Donald, 33, bested top-ranked Martin Kaymer of
Germany to take home the Walter Hagen trophy and $1.4 million.
Donald won six straight rounds to win the Match Play tournament.
He played so well, in fact, that he didn’t complete a full 18-hole
round the entire tournament.
He came into the tournament ranked ninth in the world. With the
win, his stock has gone up to No. 3.
The win puts Donald’s PGA career earnings total above
$20 million since joining the tour in 2001.
For his troubles, Kaymer walked with $850,000. Third-place
finisher Matt Kuchar took home $600,000 and fourth-place winner
Bubba Watson brought home $490,000.
Crowd favorite Tiger Woods made an early exist from the
championship after being knocked off in the first round.
