PCC Board Approves Timeline for Selecting New Chancellor

Pima Community College’s Governing Board hopes to select a new chancellor by March 2013.

On Monday, the Board unanimously approved a timeline detailing the steps it will take to choose someone to oversee PCC, one of the largest community colleges in the U.S., with approximately 30,000 students attending each semester.

The timeline targets February-March 2013 for choosing the new chancellor, and July 2013 for having the new chancellor on the job. To reach those goals, the timeline contains nearly a dozen other milestones, including:

· Fall 2012: Recruitment of candidates by a search team headed by Elizabeth Rocklin of R.H. Perry & Associates, an executive-search firm hired by the Board.

· December 2012: Selection of semifinalists by a Search Advisory Committee that consists of members of the community as well as PCC faculty, staff and administrators, and a student

· January 2013: Selection of three to five finalists by the Search Advisory Committee after in-person interviews with the semifinalists

· February 2013: Interviews of finalists by the Board, as well as PCC and community constituents.

“I’ve always said that choosing a new chancellor is the most important job that the Board has,” said Board Chairman Scott Stewart, adding that the timeline could be subject to adjustment. “We have an excellent process in place. The most important thing is not to get it done quickly, but to get it done right.”

Also at Monday’s meeting, the Board unanimously approved a plan outlining the composition of the Search Advisory Committee, which will be co-chaired by Board members Dr. Brenda Even and David Longoria.

More than dozen members of the community will serve on the committee, which will consist of about 25-30 people. The Board has asked the public to nominate persons to serve on the committee, as well as constituent groups that should be represented, in order to get a broad cross-section.

The Board has scheduled a public Special Meeting on Friday, Sept. 7 at 6:45 p.m. in the Community Board Room in PCC’s District Office, 4905 E. Broadway Blvd.

Last May, PCC awarded certificates and degrees to 3,624 students, the largest graduating class in College history. PCC also is one of the region’s largest employers. PCC has six campuses, as well as numerous learning centers throughout the Tucson area.

Also, three forums are being held today for the public to offer insights regarding the Board’s search for a new chancellor:

10:30 a.m.-noon: Desert Vista Campus, 5901 S. Calle Santa Cruz, Ocotillo Room

1-2:30 p.m.: Northwest Campus, 7600 N. Shannon Road, Community Room, Building A, Room 207

3:30-5 p.m., East Campus, 8181 E. Irvington Road, Community Room, Building L, Room 101
