Kicking the winning goal into a regulation-size soccer net is hard enough during a fast-paced game. Attempting to land a goal with all eyes on you when the net decreases to one-third its original size, well, that takes moxie.

What is moxie? It’s energy, courage and determination, according to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. And it’s the kind of challenge the national Elks Soccer Shoot Program enables youngsters to experience. The program created the sporting event to help keep youths focused and away from undesirable activities.

Area kids are invited to challenge themselves this Saturday morning during the program’s Five Goal Contest presented by Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge No. 2815. The contest consists of a series of five goals, decreasing in size from 48 inches to 17 inches.

Contestants are divided into three age divisions: 7 and younger, 8-9 and 10-11. They do not have to belong to a soccer team to participate.

The contest is open to boys and girls, who shoot separately. The younger contestants kick from 15 feet from the face of the goal, while the older contestants kick from 18 feet from the goal.

Each contestant will get one practice shot and three shots per goal, said Soccer Shoot Chairman Larry Wittenborn.

Players will receive a point for each goal they make. Points will be added up to determine the winners.

The top boy and girl in each age group will advance to the district competition; those winners will move on to the state shoot, said Tom Wilson, the exalted ruler for the Elks Lodge.

Registration forms have been distributed at local schools; however, kids can still register at the event. They must have a parent or guardian sign a release.

There is no entry fee. The Elks will provide free hot dogs, chips and soda to the contestants and their families.
