On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Marana Middle School will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate its new Fitness Center, housing cardio and weight rooms and Gym facility with climbing wall.

The celebration will include a ribbon cutting ceremony and student led tours of the facility. The event will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at 11285 W. Grier Road, Marana AZ. 85653.

The Gym Facility is now open for community use on Monday and Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Through the use of a Carol M. White Physical Education federal grant awarded through the U.S. Department of Education, Marana Middle School students now have unique opportunities to exercise in a modern Fitness Center, using state of the art equipment including an Indoor Rowing Machine, Tread wall, Life Fitness Elliptical Trainers, Stair Climbers, Upper Body Ergometer, Spinning Bikes, weights. A climbing wall was constructed in the gym facility and new supplies were purchased to engage students at all levels.

Students are now using medicine balls, plyo boxes, agility ladders, weights, a boxing bag, roller blades, and other sports equipment.

Since implementing its Fitness for Life program, Marana Middle School has seen an increase in the number of students participating in health-related activities.

The schools’ program exposes all students to relevant modes of sustaining a physically active and healthy lifestyle. Students are not only learning the Arizona physical activity and nutrition standards, they are learning to develop personal physical activity plans in order to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness.

“This grant has provided us the opportunity to change the physical education program for the purpose of changing lives,” said Amy Corner, the physical education coordinator at the school. “We are pleased that students are not only using the Fitness Center during class time but we have seen a significant increase in students participating in after school activities as well.

“We are excited to see our students affecting change in their lives and in the lives of their families.”

Marana Middle School was selected in 2010 to receive a $647,432 Carol M. White Physical Education grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the 3-year federal grant is to expand and improve the school’s physical education program for students. The middle school was one of 77 recipients across the country to receive the grant.
