Northwest Fire District crews responded to the Casas Adobes Apartment complex located at 6200 N. Oracle Rd just before 1:00pm after a 9-1-1 call from a neighbor.

The neighbor was asked by the occupants of the apartment unit to call 9-1-1 after they came home and found the fire. 9-1-1.

Crews arrived within 5 minutes of the 9-1-1 call to find smoke coming from a second story unit, according to department spokesperson Adam Goldberg.

The initial crew made an interior attack on the fire and had the blaze under control within 8 minutes of their arrival.   The fire was confined to the bedroom and investigators credited the bedroom door being closed with isolating the fire and keeping it from spreading to the rest of the unit and adjacent apartments.

The male occupant of the apartment also entered the apartment to try to fight the fire before the arrival of fire crews.  He was able to find the dog in the bedroom and bring it outside.  The 21 year-old male was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but declined transportation to the hospital.  The female occupant of the apartment was uninjured. The dog did not survive the exposure to the thick smoke.

Investigators at the scene were unable to pinpoint an exact cause of the fire and it has officially been listed as undetermined.  Damages were estimated at $5,000.  The couple was displaced from the unit and will be staying with relatives in town.

No other residents of the building where the fire took place were affected by the incident.
