After receiving the final petition signatures required, Oro Valley’s town limits will be expanded to include 107 acres of unincorporated land northwest of Oracle and Ina roads.
On March 21, 2012 the town filed the necessary paperwork with the Pima County Recorder’s Office to begin annexation efforts in the area, which includes Ina Road to the south, Paseo del Norte to the west, Chapala Drive to the north, and Oracle Road to the east.
The annexation area is made up of 11 commercial and 11 residential parcels.
According to Town Manager Greg Caton, the town had to receive support from 50 percent of property owners, representing more than 50 percent of the assessed valuation of real and personal property.
Final signatures by Quality Inn and Tohono Chul Park secured those prerequisites.
The town also acquired sufficient residential signatures, with seven of the 11 residential parcels supporting annexation.
Other commercial property owners signing the petition include the Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce, Southern Arizona Arts and Culture Alliance, Bank of the West, CH Robinson, Southern Arizona Endodontics, Desert Star Addiction Recovery Center, Country Financial Services, Sun Dental, and St. Odilia Parish.
Communications Administrator Misti Nowak says the benefits the town will provide the area helped finalize the deal.
The Town’s reputation for public safety has been a selling point to many businesses and residences. Nowak says other benefits will follow suit.
“The town will make significant roadway and drainage improvements to Northern Avenue between Ina and Chapala Drive, and will take responsibility for maintenance of portions of Ina Road, Paseo del Norte and Chapala Drive,” said Nowak. “Business owners and residents will be able to take advantage of the town’s streamlined permitting and development services process as well as our shop local programs. Residents will also be able to participate in town elections and decisions that affect their quality of life.”
While the town will in part benefit from additional sales tax from the annexation, Assistant to the Town Manager Kevin Burke says the income will be minimal.
“The town will see some increased revenue, although this will be offset by expenditures on service enhancement and infrastructure improvements,” he said.
The completed petition will now be filed with the Pima County Recorder’s Office. Tentative approval is scheduled to go before town council on April 17.
