Explorer photographer Randy Metcalf won three awards during the annual Arizona Press Club Awards’ banquet on May 19, including a third-place honor in the Community Photojournalist of the Year category.
This is the first year the Arizona Press Club has offered a category for community photojournalists. Beatrice Richardson, a photographer from the Sierra Vista Herald, a daily newspaper in Cochise County, took first place.
Metcalf, who has been at The Explorer for nearly six years, also took first place in the Pictorial Category, and took second place for Best Sports Feature Photograph.
“Randy has great visual skills, is great with the community and is no doubt one of the best in the state when it comes to community photography and journalism,” said Managing Editor Thelma Grimes. “Randy is a true asset to The Explorer Newspaper.”
Winning an award through the Arizona Press Club is a big honor for all winners, as judges are selected from only the best in the business nationwide. Many of the press club judges have either won a Pulitzer Prize, or have been named a finalist for the prestigious award.
