With counting done for the day, Rep. Ron Barber is now leading Republican opponent Martha McSally in the race for Congressional District 2.

The CD2 remains one of the more closely-watched races this election, with Pima County having 10 days after the election to finish counting a high number of early and provisional ballots.

At the end of counting on Monday, Pima County finished counting an additional 3,421 ballots, leaving Barber ahead in the race with 133,953, and McSally trails with 133,255.

Counting will resume around 1 p.m. Tuesday at 1 p.m. There is still 4,000 early ballots to be counted,

In the interim, the Recorder’s Office has turned its attention to the approximately 27,000 provisional ballots issued at the polling places. The office has until Nov. 16 to finish verifying those ballots.

An as-yet-undetermined number of provisional and conditional ballots issued at the polling places will not be certified for a number of different reasons, including if voters failed to provide the appropriate identification, were not registered to vote, or already cast an early ballot before showing up at the polling places.

Counting of provisional ballots will proceed as batches are received and processed. None of the provisional ballots have been counted to date.
