A fire at the Catalina Neighborhood Park is being called suspicious as the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Thomas Piene, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department, said that on Monday, July 7 around 3:05 p.m. deputies from the Foothills District responded to a report of a fire at the park, located at 16562 N. Oracle Road in Catalina.

The Golder Ranch Fire Department had also responded and extinguished playground equipment that was on fire. The playground equipment was destroyed.

Diane Luber, the Pima County communications coordinator, said the playground was built in 2000 using $35,000 of Community Development Block Grant funds.

The playground cost about $35,000 when it was installed in 2000. Community Development Block Grant funds were used to pay for the project.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information on this case to call 911 or 88-Crime. There is a $2,500 reward for tips that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects.
