On March 29, the Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 presented Community service awards to area residents.

Elizabeth Armenta received the Citizen of the Year award. Armenta has dedicated 32 years to education, and is currently in her fifth year as principal of Road Runner Elementary School in the Marana Unified School District.

Armenta was chosen for this prestigious award for her commitment to education and youth in the community.

Every year, Elks lodges across the country recognize firefighters and police officers for their dedication to their communities. Once again, Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge honored personnel from the Golder Ranch Fire District and the Oro Valley Police Department.

Cpt. Steve Drury was named Firefighter of the Year for the work he has done as a recruit training officer for academy classes at Golder Ranch Fire District. Colin Ryan was named Paramedic of the Year for his performance at the Jan. 8, 2011 shootings and two serious medical incidents involving young children.

Oro Valley Police Officer Dan Horetski was named Police Officer of the Year for his dedication to youth programs in the community. He is the school resource officer at Canyon Del Oro High School where he acts as counselor and teacher to more than 1,700 students.
