Irasema Teran, a Marana police officer who was charged with a DUI, was fired on Jan. 24.

Teran was arrested by the Oro Valley Police Department for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol on Dec. 10.

Following the arrest, Teran was put on paid administrative leave before being terminated on Jan. 24.

After denying The Explorer’s request for copies of the discharge papers, Laine Sklar, senior assistant town attorney, said, “Pursuant to (Arizona Revised Statute) 38.1101(L), I am not permitted to release any information pertaining to her termination until the appeal process is complete.”

Teran appealed her termination last week.

In the criminal case, Teran was arraigned in front of Pima County Superior Court Judge José Luis Castillo on March 15 where not-guilty pleas to all counts were entered on behalf of the defendant.

Teran also filed an Office of Court Appointed Counsel form to get court-appointed counsel.

A case management conference has been set for April 25.

In the Dec. 10 incident, Teran was allegedly stopped for a red-light violation, and Oro Valley police officials say there was enough evidence to begin a DUI investigation.

It was later found that Teran was driving on a suspended license.

According to Teran’s personnel files, the Town of Marana checked the validity of her license and conducted a background check when she was first hired in 2007.

Teran, who had been with the Marana Police Department for 4 years, was off-duty at the time of the arrest.

According to Teran’s personnel file, the police officer received high marks in annual evaluations during her first two years. However, in 2009 and 2010, she received several letters of reprimand for various issues, including not showing up for an online writing class that was paid for by the Town, and for being involved in the arrest of the wrong subject.
