Flags at all state offices and facilities are being flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today to honor fallen firefighters, by order of Governor Jan Brewer.
"I encourage all individuals, businesses and other organizations to join in this tribute," Brewer said in a statement released Oct. 14.
The mandate comes on the heels on Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15, during which President Obama ordered that the United States flag be flown at half-staff on all federal office buildings in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
"Arizona is no stranger to the occurrence of preventable fires," Brewer said. "This summer saw some of the most devastating wildfires our state has ever borne, with flames destroying more than one hundred homes and businesses and charring approximately 1 million acres of state land.
"The fact that no lives were lost in these fires is a true testament to the swift and staggering response by heroes from across the state and the nation - namely, firefighters."
