Carla and Robert Springer are the recipients of the 2011 Arizona Education Association’s Partners in Education Award. The award honors those who support neighborhood schools. Recipients include corporations, local businesses, individuals or community groups that exhibit exemplary support for local public schools. Only one such award is given each year for the entire state.

The Springers coordinate Project MathPlus+ at Coronado K-8 School. They accepted the award on behalf of the 50 SaddleBrooke and community volunteer tutors who faithfully come to school weekly to offer assistance in math within the Coronado classrooms.

Project MathPlus+ is a part of the Amphitheater Public Schools Foundation, Inc. The program places individual volunteers right in the Coronado classrooms to assist students in understanding daily lessons and catching up on previously taught material that was troublesome for them on an individual basis.

The program adheres to the Arizona State math curriculum standards and helps to ensure that each Coronado student is taught each required math concept.

While the MathPlus+ Program receives sponsorships from the SaddleBag Notes Community Fund, the SaddleBrooke Rotary Club Foundation and SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, more help is needed to purchase books (about $25 per student) in time for the next school year, according to a press release from Amphi Foundation Executive Director Leslie Fehr.

To help, citizens can mail their tax-deductible check to the Amphitheater Public Schools Foundation, 701 W. Wetmore Road, Tucson, AZ 85705.

For more information, contact Fehr at 696-5147.
